Job Description:
Deployed Linguists (Pashto, Urdu, Dari, and/or Farsi) will collaborate with Information Technology professionals and other language professionals to support US Government document exploitation and other translation activities on DoD-controlled installations or facilities in Afghanistan.   Primary duties include screening, gisting, translating, transcribing, reporting and electronically processing and archiving of text, video, audio, and other media as required by the Government customer.   The successful Linguist will be able to quickly scan, understand, and translate a wide variety of general and highly technical topics, maintaining the integrity and meaning of the material - this includes nuance such as irony, sarcasm, humor, or attempts to disguise subject matter.  To achieve this, linguists must also possess a relatively advanced knowledge of the culture, regional politics, and history of the regions associated with their respective languages.  Additionally, senior-level Linguists may be required to perform Quality Control review of translation and translation-related work to improve overall quality.  Senior-level Linguists may also be required to develop appropriate training aids, delegate production tasks, and clarify expectations of junior-level Linguists to improve productivity and quality.  Translations must be performed to/from the target language and English.  Additional duties may include simultaneous or consecutive interpretation services to/from the target language and English as required by the Government customer for a variety of situations.

Basic Requirements:

• Secret (final) security clearance; Top Secret or greater clearance may be required for some positions.
• Current, testable language proficiency at the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level “3” or greater in Pashto Urdu, Dari, or Farsi, as well as English.  ILR level “4” is required for some positions.
• Documented language proficiency; iBS will arrange language testing as needed;  language test scores must be less than six (6) months old for reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking 
• English-language proficiency must also be at ILR 3 minimum level

• Prior experience in translation or document exploitation is highly desired.
• Must be able to translate both general and highly-technical materials.
• Must be able to read and speak coherently in the target language as well as English.

Other Requirements:

• Must be capable of writing reports, gists, summaries, transcripts, or full translations within a timeframe defined by the Government customer
• Must possess solid working proficiency in Microsoft Office tools; advanced proficiency in MS Word and MS Excel.
• Solid working proficiency in Intelligence Community transliteration system for respective language is highly desired.
• Multi-language proficiency in the required languages is highly desired.
• Must be willing and able to pass a health-related screening and medical exam to be eligible to overseas duty.
• Must be willing and able to complete pre-deployment training.
• Must be willing and able to make a one-year commitment to live/work in Afghanistan.
• Must be willing and able to live and work in austere, harsh, hostile, and/or potentially hazardous conditions as exist on DoD installations in Afghanistan.
